Our next stop was Honolulu and a full day tour of the sites of the attack on Pearl Harbor including Hickham Field, Wheeler Field, Schofield barracks and the Pearl Harbor site itself. It was a very well done tour with highly knowledgeable guides — especially for vets. We actually had one WWII vet on our tour. One of the guides(ex-navy) asked me to write up one of my experiences running my riverboat in Vietnam for a book he was doing on command decisions.

In the evening there was a special party for the round-the-world cruisers — about a third of our passengers. The party was on the battleship Missouri tied up near the Arizona memorial. To get to the ship we hqd to go through the Ford Island naval station so the party was off limits to non-U.S. citizens.

The theme was 1940s swing with very creditable imitations of the Andrews Sisters and a swing band. The food and drinks were fabulous and fortunately, I wasn’t driving. I’m not sure why Laura and I were invited since we were not part of the round the world contingent, but I’m very glad we were.
