Our last stop in French Polynesia was Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas, once and outpost of the U.S. Navy during the War of 1812. The outpost is long-gone and there is very little else on the island. There is a small village and a monument honoring Herman Melville who jumped ship there and later based his novels Typee and Omoo on his experiences there. The day was very hot and humid so we pretty much just took the next tender back to our ship |
