Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful resort city on the Bahia de Banderas (Bay of Flags) that attracts a large number of American tourists. We saw little of the city itself as we decided to spend the day sailing the bay on a gaff-rigged schooner. Unfortunately there was very little wind so we spent the time motoring but otherwise the weather was perfect. From the boat we got good look at the beachfront which includes everything from Spanish-style churches and government buildings to modern hotels. We sailed (motored) over to Los Arcos, a rock formation in the bay that provides rich a sports fishing area. The water was very clear and we were able to see the fish beneath the surface.

Azi spent a lot of the time talking to the captain about sailing a heavy gaff-rigged boat and the problems of getting parts for the boat’s ford diesel. We were served fresh fruit and copious drinks including Margaritas and local beer.
