We left Seward at about 8:00 and headed for Yakutat Bay and the Hubbard Glacier. The Hubbard glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that is actually advancing. This happens because it is joined by the Valerie glacier just before it reaches the waters of Disenchantment Bay and the addition of ice from the Valerie glacier is causing the advance.

When we booked this cruise last year, friends on the ship told us to try to get one of the five stern cabins so we could see the whole panorama from our cabin balcony. They were right. We invited some friends and had a glacier party with champagne and cheese and fruit whie we watched the glacier unfold before us.

We had seen glaciers in Norway last year but never anything like this. The ice at the front of the glacier was blue. And there were small ice floes in the water as we sailed also blue but no major icebergs. Nor did we see and icebergs calving off the glacier.

However, the captain did get us as close to the glacier as possible and spun the ship so passengers on either side could get a good view.
